Daarvoor was hij van 1994 tot 1997 Chief Financial Officer van Matav, de historische telefoonoperator in Hongarije. Van 1991 tot 1994 was hij Chief Financial Officer bij Ameritech International, de in Chicago gevestigde International Business Development-afdeling van Ameritech.
De heer Stewart behaalde een diploma in Accounting en een MBA in Finance. Hij is ook een erkend accountant. Sinds september 2007 is de heer Stewart ook lid van de raad van bestuur van Nyrstar.
